SIR EUROPE: CCEE ASSEMBLY; CARD. RE, "WE CAN’T REFORM THE CHURCH THROUGH PROTESTS"

"We can’t reform the Church through protests, by distancing ourselves from it, but by reforming ourselves, following Christ in poverty, humbleness, love and filial obedience". This thought was in the homily by Card. Giovanni Battista Re, prefect of the Congregation for the Bishops. Yesterday evening, he presided over the Mass celebrated at the Fatima Sanctuary together with the presidents of European Bishops Conferences (CCEE), who met on the occasion of their yearly assembly. The cardinal dedicated the reflection to Saint Francis who – he added, – "has many things to teach to today’s Christians in Europe", in particular, owing to "his message of real man who was able to reach peace with God, with himself, with the others, and with the whole creation". Cardinal Re recalled that the saint from Assisi, "man becoming prayer", "accomplished the Gospel sine linea et sine glossa" (constantly and with no additions), and for this reason, he "still has something to say to today’s men, often disoriented and dried up by misleading mentalities and lifestyles. Francis – he concluded – has many things to teach us bishops, too, who have the task to build the Church of God as masters of faith, sanctifiers and pastors".
