MYANMAR: ASIAN BISHOP, "PRAYERS AND MASSES" FOR "THE END OF VIOLENCE"

The Catholic Bishops of Asia express their "deepest concern" for the "upsetting events" that are taking place in Myanmar. In a message to mgr. Paul Zinghtung Grawng, archbishop of Mandalay, the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences (Fabc) expresses "great sympathy and understanding" for the situation of the Catholics in Myanmar, whom the local bishops have invited in the last few days to pray for the situation in the country. "On behalf of Fabc – writes the secretary general, mgr. Orlando B.Quevedo, bishop of Cotabato (Philippines) –, I express our sympathy with the Catholics in Myanmar. I invite the members of our Bishops Conferences to offer prayers and Masses to ask the Lord of Pace that no further violence take place". In addition, mgr. Quevedo, explains to the bishops of ex Burma that the Catholics of Asia "pray that the problems of your beloved country may be solved through peaceful talks for the protection of the common good. We ask all the parties concerned to move on in this direction". The Catholic Church of India too – through a spokesperson – invited the military junta of Myanmar to "respect the democratic aspiration of the population".
