ANGLICANS: RELEASE FROM THE US EPISCOPALIAN BISHOPS, STOP GAY ORDINATIONS AND THE BLESSING OF SAME-SEX COUPLES (2)

"We, members of the House of Bishops – goes on the release –, undertake not to authorise the use, in our dioceses, of any public ceremonies for the blessing of gay couples, until wider consensus emerges from within the Communion". However, the American bishops ask the provinces of the Anglican Communion to start, from now to the Conference of Lambeth 2008, a "listening process" on human sexuality which will also include gay people, in the awareness that "in some cultural settings a debate on homosexuality can be difficult". In the release, the American bishops also ask the archbishop of Canterbury to find a way to let bishop Gene Robinson attend the Conference of Lambeth 2008 and conclude: "our shared commitment to defend the civil rights of homosexuals and our commitment to oppose to any action or policy that abuses them, encourages abuse against them, or breaches their dignity as the Children of God, should be clear and avowed".
