"Languages open new horizons for the personal and professional growth of the individuals and boost economic development". Leonard Orban, commissioner for multilingualism, presents the initiatives that have been planned for tomorrow on the occasion of the European Language Day. "Multilingualism is a growing need in our society adds Orban -. The EU citizens are more and more mobile and often spend part of their lives in a foreign country. The ability to understand and be understood in a different language does not only concern our daily life or visits to hospitals, courts, port offices or supermarkets in different countries, but also the assertion of our democratic rights". The Language Day, launched by the EU Commission and the Council of Europe, takes place on September 26th every year. Its avowed aims include: "Raising public awareness of the importance of learning foreign languages, increasing awareness and recognition of all languages, and encouraging lifelong learning" in this sphere. Tomorrow, Brussels will host two international conferences and an exhibition in the "European district".
