SIREUROPA: CANVASSING AT EU PARLIAMENT TO SAVE THE CATHEDRAL OF BUCHAREST

Negotiations are in full swing in the corridors of the European Parliament in Strasbourg to save the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Bucharest, a historical and architectural monument endangered by the "illegal building", just 8 metres away, of a huge skyscraper with 20 storeys and 4 underground floors. "With the aid of some MEPs, including some Italian ones – explains to SIR father Francisc Dobos, who is following the case in Strasbourg on behalf of the Romanian Catholic Church –, we are collecting the last signatures of the MEPs, so that President Pottering can publicly read a statement in which the European Parliament strongly condemns the illegal building of the skyscraper. Between tomorrow and Thursday, we should know if the statement will be read or not". The building – reads the statement – seriously endangers the Cathedral and the Catholic Archbishop’s Palace of Bucharest, "both included in the list of historical buildings of Rumanian architecture". In this statement, the European Parliament will ask the EU Commission and the EU Council to open "due legal proceedings to force" the Romanian authorities "to fulfil the EU obligations regarding the preservation and protection of the cultural and architectural heritage".
