"This attack is meant to halt Lebanon’s progress towards peace and democracy. It is urgent to bring the people responsible for the attack to justice". Those words were spoken by Father Paul Karam, national director of the Papal Missionary Works, who thus commented yesterday’s terrorist attack in Beirut, causing the death of anti-Syrian Maronite MP Antoine Ghanem and another nine people. The attack happened in the Christian district of Sin-El-Fil. The murder took place a few days before the election of the president of the Republic, who’s going to be appointed by the Lebanese parliament, made up of an anti-Syrian Sunnite, Druse and Christian majority and a pro-Syrian opposition. "Now the risk of staking everything again is high, while in the last few days, the two parties looked for a compromise stated Father Karam; – the president of the parliament, Nabih Berri, had suggested a new name to foster the agreement. But the enemies of Lebanon don’t want to see a strong president, whose figure would meet with acceptance. They don’t want a peaceful and democratic country. As Christians he concluded, we must not be afraid, and must not lose hope, which is also entrusted to the strong and convinced commitment of both Europe and the international community".
