"As part of our fight to halve the number of people who die on the streets by 2010, we are taking measures to improve safety on all fronts: from the drivers, to the infrastructure, to the cars". Jacques Barrot, EU Commissioner for transport, introduced the report on "intelligent cars", a document that will be illustrated today in Versailles (France) during the yearly 2007 event on intelligent cars. The "final results of a EU-funded research project which studied applications and preventative technology for road safety" will be announced, instead, on September 19th and 20th. For a long time, explains Barrot, "the EU Commission has been working hard to make sure the cutting-edge technology that can save lives and reduce the environmental impact of transport will be available on cars as soon as possible". Before 2007, the Executive has committed itself to open "negotiations with the European and Asian car associations to reach an agreement on the pan-European emergency call service known as eCall as a standard fitting to be provided on all new cars from 2010".
