EUROPEAN CHURCHES: CCEE, "THE INTERNET CULTURE AND THE CHURCH" (3)

"We see a growth in the presence of the Church within the media and renewed interest in the religious sphere": this is one of the findings of the yearly meeting of Ceem where the bishops in charge of European regional language groups presented the work done over the last year. "Problems" are not missing either. They include "the revision of the methods to have access to public radio and TV services". Actually, in some countries, some recent European provisions and the presence of new religions have led to reconsider the presence of Catholic programmes in the public service. Not only: "some liturgical events of national and international relevance have also been trivialised". Then "the Church has been exploited for political purposes, especially in the debates about ethical issues"; "the Church has been reduced to an institution interested in defending its own interests"; "religion is viewed as a problem for cohabitation, especially after the terrorist attacks of New York and London. So, "an image of the Church based on the testimony of its devotees and the presentation of the Christian message needs to be spread. Consistency and authority are needed today", partly because "the young are very interested in religion and in the lifestyles it conveys".
