BENEDICT XVI: TO FUTURE PRIESTS, A GESTURE "SO FULL OF MYSTERY"

” “"Bringing the Gospel to everyone, so that everyone will experience the joy of Christ and there will be joy in every city". With these words, the Pope summarised the meaning of the "priestly mission" as he ordained 29 deans presbyters in Saint Peter’s Basilica yesterday. "Announcing and testifying joy: this is the core of your mission", said Benedict XVI to the future priests. Then, lingering on the "meaningful" gesture of the imposition of the hands, the Pope advised them: "In the future, you shall always go back to this time, to this gesture that has nothing magical, yet is so full of mystery, because this is the source of your new mission. In that silent prayer, two freedoms meet: God’s freedom, working through the Holy Spirit, and man’s freedom. The whole of the gestures is important, but infinitely more important is the spiritual, invisible movement that it expresses; a movement that is aptly evoked by the holy silence that enwraps everything inside and outside". "Without one’s love for Christ, which is accomplished through the observance of His Commandments – explained the Holy Father –, one calls oneself out of the Trinitarian movement and starts withdrawing into oneself, losing the ability to receive and communicate God".
