Fighting drugs dealing, through information and prevention campaigns, with the support of society and by funding the conversion of the land that produces raw materials from which drugs are made. The EU Parliament launches its "strong message" to Europe in a report by the Italian MEP Giusto Catania, responding to the Green Paper of the EU Commission on the subject. The report (passed with 600 votes for, 35 against and 32 abstentions) "acknowledges the key role played by society in support of the development, enforcement and follow up of drugs policies"; in addition, it recognises that "the churches and religious communities have played a very proactive part in the fight against drugs" and for this reason "their experience should be kept in mind" when developing common drugs policies. The EU Parliament thinks it is urgent to start, with the help of the EU, the States, parents’ associations and schools, "exhaustive information campaigns about the damage for physical and mental health caused by drugs use". Such campaigns should place emphasis on the dangers of mothers transmitting drugs to their children in the womb. Special help should be planned for "parents of drug-addict children". (continued)
