PARAGUAY: LUGO; MGR.GOGORZA (BISHOPS PRESIDENT) TO SIR, "CONFIDENT IN A GOOD RELATIONSHIP"

He wishes for "a good relationship between the Church and the new president of Paraguay", even if, "mgr. Lugo’s personal situation is in the hands of the Holy See": it was stated today to SIR by mgr. Ignacio Gogorza, bishop of Encarnaciòn and president of the Bishops Conference of Paraguay, about Fernando Lugo, the former bishop of San Pedro who was suspended "a divinis" by the Vatican for his political commitment, winning the presidential election. "We are confident in a good relationship", says mgr. Gogorza in an interview which will be published on old.agensir.it: "At least this is what has been said by mgr. Lugo: he is keen on remaining in the Catholic Church". "What we wish for – he specifies – is a normalisation of the situation between the Church and the State and a relationship with the new president". "As a Bishops Conference – he explains – we acknowledge mgr. Lugo as a legitimately elected president pursuant to the national Constitution. However he remains a suspended ‘a divinis’ bishop. But now we are trying to see how to find a solution to the problem because canon law doesn’t speak of reducing a bishop to lay status. The Vatican is studying how to get out of such an awkward situation. We are waiting for guidance and for the decision of the Holy Father and the Vatican". (continued)
