As to the situation of the Kurdish population in Turkey (approximately 25% of the total), the Report adopted yesterday by the Foreign Affairs Commission of the European Parliament insists on respecting the rights of minorities and on developing a scheme "for the actual learning of the Kurdish language in the public and private school system", using public radio and TV as well. One of the issues concerning the Kurdish question was the use of violence. The text asks the Pkk to "order an immediate ceasefire and have it respected" and asks the Kurdish population and authorities to distance themselves from any form of armed fight. In addition, the Parliamentary Commission highlights that "the plan for the new Constitution will have to guarantee gender equality", considering women "basically as the members of one family or community" and reasserting the fundamental human rights.
