THE POPE IN THE USA: THE LEAVE SPEECH, "GOD BLESS AMERICA"

The speech at the United Nations and the visit to Ground Zero: those were two of the “most significant events” mentioned by the Pope in his speech on leaving the United States. As for the historical speech at the United Nations Building, once again Benedict XV mentioned the sixty years elapsed from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, thanking UNO “for everything the Organization was able to do for defending and promoting the fundamental rights of every man, woman and child in every part of the world”, and encouraging “all the men of good will to go on making efforts indefatigably, to promote the fair and peaceful coexistence of peoples and nations”. The visit to Ground Zero, stated the Holy Father, “will remain deeply marked in my mind, while I will go on praying for all the people who died and for all the ones who are suffering for the consequences of the tragedy taking place there in 2001”. “I pray God, our Father in the sky, for everyone in the United States and all over the world – it was the hope of the Pope at the end of his eighth apostolic journey outside Italy –, for the future to bring us more brotherhood and solidarity, higher mutual respect, and renewed trust and confidence”. Then, there was the greeting which has become usual, by now, during the days of his stay in America, starting from his first speech at the White House: “God bless America!”.
