THE POPE IN THE USA: TO THE UN, "PROMOTING HUMAN RIGHTS TO REMOVE INJUSTICE" (2)

The action of the international community, stated the Pope, "must never be construed as an unwanted imposition or a restriction of sovereignty. On the contrary, it is indifference or lack of action that cause real damage". Then the Pope launched an invitation to "look more intensively for ways to prevent and control conflicts". Human rights, he said, "are based on the natural law that is engraved in man’s heart and exists in the different cultures and civilisations". "Removing human rights from this sphere would mean surrendering to a relativistic concept", under which "the interpretation of rights might change, and their universal character would be denied in the name of a cultural, political, social or even religious context". Of course, he admitted, "the victims of hardships and desperation, whose human dignity is violated scot-free, become easy prey to the temptation of violence and may personally become the infringers of peace". Then he made an exhortation "to double up the efforts to cope with pressure, to re-interpret the foundations of the Declaration", a pressure which is sometimes only made "to fulfil simple interests, often private interests".
