COUNCIL OF EUROPE: STATES AND ISLAMIC COMMUNITIES TOGETHER AGAINST EXTREMISM

A "synergic action between the member states and the Muslim communities" living in the old continent, "to fight political extremism in the name of Islam". In a resolution unanimously passed today, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) asks for a firm fight against Islam-phobic attitudes, speeches instigating to hatred and violence, and "watching over the respect of man by setting up anti-terrorism measures". The report drawn up by the Portuguese delegate, João Bosco Mota Amaral, asks the 49 countries of the CoE to tackle the root causes of extremism, including "discrimination, social exclusion, unequal opportunities", and to "promote the immigrants’ political and social inclusion and participation". In addition, the report states that, within the laicism of the political institutions, the States must guarantee freedom of religion. On the other hand, the Islamic communities in Europe are asked "to clearly condemn terrorism and extremism". The plenary meeting of the PACE is going on with a broad debate about a document concerning the "right to abortion" in Europe.
