CHILD SLAVERY: SPAIN, DENUNCIATION FROM THE CHRISTIAN CULTURAL MOVEMENT

"In the midst of the 21st century, we see one of the most shameful situations of all times: child slavery. Wars, prostitution, labour exploitation, hunger, abuse…. This is the scenario for over 400 million children across the world every day". This is denounced by the Spanish Christian Cultural movement on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Slavery, which will be celebrated tomorrow in remembrance of Iqbal Masih, the Pakistani 12-year-old boy, who was killed on 16th April 1995 by the textile mafia for having fought against the phenomenon. "Enslaved children – goes on the Movement – contribute 13,000 million euros a year to the world’s GDP. In Spain, two million children live under the threshold of poverty, 500 thousand to one million of whom are forced to work, forgetting about playing or getting an education". According to the Movement which denounces the phenomenon with the Sympathetic Youth Path and the Internationalist Solidarity and Self-Management Party, "child slavery is the world’s greatest problem for labour and therefore for the trade unions. Despite this, the international labour movements and political parties, including the Spanish ones, hardly care about this issue. For them, child slavery does not exist". Instead, "child slavery is an ever-rising planetary holocaust". (continued)
