THE POPE TO THE UN: MGR. MIGLIORE TO SIR, "EXPECTATION IS GREAT AND FULL OF HOPE"

The Pope’s visit to the UN takes place in the year of the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. "The Holy See – explains mgr. Migliore – holds in great esteem this text. While drawing it up, the greatest philosophical, moral and religious traditions joined forces in recognising the equal dignity of all human beings and in finding rights that are so fundamental they cannot be either negotiated or denied to anyone, anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, today we see there’s not a single one of these rights that is not violated, or negligence everywhere. And this is due to the persisting belief that it is the States and the Governments that grant rights and determine their contents and extent, rather than recognising that they are engraved in human nature". What contribution will this visit make to the current world scenarios? "A distinctive feature of the Pope’s thinking and action on the international scene – states the archbishop – is having polished the tone and sped up the pace of encounter and dialogue between people and populations from different cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs. He shies away from academic niceties and asks relevant questions for the cohabitation of individuals and populations: equal dignity for every human being, the common sense of human rights, of democracy, of freedom, especially freedom of religion".
