COUNCIL OF EUROPE: WORLD DAY OF ROMANIES

"We should seize the opportunity to celebrate the contribution given by the Romany population to the diversity and cultural wealth of Europe”, this was stated by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Terry Davis, on April 8th, on the occasion of the World Day of Romanies. "For some time already – stated Davis –, the CoE has been fighting against the prejudices the Romany community is the victim of in south-eastern Europe. We intend to extend the ‘Dosta’ campaign (the Romany for ‘enough’: it is an awareness-raising campaign to bring Romany and non-Romany citizens closer together) to ask for more rights, more equality, more inclusion and more respect for our European friends who are members of the Romany community". In addition, the Secretary General of the CoE mentions the enforcement of the Recommendation adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the CoE on February 20th which provides guidelines to develop national strategies for the Romany people, placing emphasis on the proactive participation of such communities in the enforcement of such policies.
