"God’s mercy gives a special interpretation to his papacy", as said by John Paul II, who "wanted the message of God’s merciful love to reach all men and who exhorted the faithful to be its witnesses". It was said today by Benedict XVI, who, at the end of Mass in repose of John Paul II’s soul, on the third anniversary of his death, sent a "special thought" to the participants in the first World Congress on the Divine Mercy, starting today. "That’s why he wanted to raise sister Faustina Kowalska to the honour of the altars", commented Benedict XVI, taking his cue from last Sunday’s "Regina Coeli". "The servant of God John Paul II had experienced and personally lived the terrible tragedies of the XX century and for a long time he had wondered what could curb the tide of evil", said the Holy Father, who commented: "The answer could but be found in God’s love". "Only the Divine Mercy warned the Pontiff can curb evil; only God’s almighty love can defeat the overbearing manner of the wicked and the destructive power of selfishness and hatred". That’s why, during his last visit to Poland, as he went back to his home country, John Paul II said: "There’s no other source of hope for man but God’s mercy".
