ENVIRONMENT: "HALT LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN". MEETING IN NICE

"The integrated management of Mediterranean coastal areas, from local to regional areas: how is it possible to halt biodiversity loss?". That is the subject of the meeting taking place in Nice from 18th to 19th December, within the French presidency of the European Union and the process of Barcelona – Union for the Mediterranean Sea -, and within the framework of the "European Directive on Sea Strategy" (June 2008). The meeting is promoted by the French Ministry of Energy and Sustainable Development, and the Egyptian Ministry of Environmental Affairs. In particular, through four workshops, the meeting (gathering State institutions, public local authorities, managers and operators in this sector, as well as non-governmental organizations in the Mediterranean area) will tackle the crucial questions linked with the carrying out of the Protocol of integrated management of coastal areas, signed on 21 January 2008 by 14 of the 22 Parties of the Barcelona Convention: sustainable tourism, climate change and shoreline recession affecting some stretches of coast; a network connecting players, governance, financing, cross-border approaches; network of protected spaces and biological continuity. The objective is to define trends and concrete actions to halt the loss of Mediterranean biodiversity. ” “
