Testifying the values in which one believes without falling into "preaching", but remaining loyal to the "criteria of journalism", i.e. "telling life, finding in reality stories to be told". This is the task of a Catholic journalist in an age in which "his work is particularly hard and put under pressure". This was said by Ismar Soares, president of the International Catholic Press Union (ICPU), as he spoke with SIR during the meeting promoted in Rome by his organisation on "Journalism and Ethics at the crossroads of the modern world". A journalist who wants to deal with the values of the Gospel, points out Soares, "perceives the difficulty in speaking of issues in which ideological fights are greater and on which the Church seems unable to express itself". Usually, "neutral information" is asked for, but a Catholic journalist, points out the president of ICPU, "although providing correct information, cannot neglect those values that the Church defends and that he acknowledges himself". "A journalist is a storyteller", and, as such, he is called to expound on those values, "using the language of the mass media, which is the language of the story of human lives". "Digging up examples of life that are faithful to the love of God and consistent with the teachings of the Church" is the best way to "testify in compliance with ethics and with one’s professional standards".” “
