WEB: BARROSO (EU COMMISSION) LAUNCHES "SAFER INTERNET" TO IMPROVE CHILDREN’S SAFETY

"Safer Internet is a good example of a European action that has a direct impact on the daily life of the population". José Manuel Barroso, president of the EU Commission, personally presents in Brussels the new plan "to improve children’s safety while they surf the web", thus highlighting "the importance the EU Executive attaches to this problem". "More and more children and teenagers use web technology at home and at school – adds the Portuguese politician –. Hence the need of appropriately informing parents, children and teachers about the opportunities offered by the Internet and the risks associated with the web". According to the MEPs, "the new plan means to fight not only illegal contents but also harmful behaviours, such as online bullying or online seduction for sexual purposes". Last year the EU Commission had started a wide consultation on the subject and is now launching this plan, which will receive financial investments worth 55 million euros for 2009-2013. (continued)
