CUBA: THE BISHOPS’ RESPONSE TO THE POPE’S MESSAGE

“The Pope’s exhortations coincide with the pastoral concerns of the Bishops – comments mgr. José Felix Perez, executive secretary of the Cuban Bishops Conference –, which give pride of place to the good of the population. These words drive us to continue with enthusiasm our pastoral work on people’s side”. The subjects addressed with card. Bertone in a conversation that has been defined as "very fraternal" include the one highlighted by the Pope, that is, the callings to priesthood, “the material and spiritual needs of the Cuban population, the evangelisation and promotion of the common good, the need of a more widespread coverage on the mass media, the need of new churches”. In the afternoon, card. Bertone went to the seminary of San Carlo and Sant’Ambrogio in Havana, where he met 60 seminarians. All over Cuba they are about one hundred, and priests are 320. Figures about callings remain consistent, "there’s no rumour of a crisis like in Europe – specifies mgr. Perez -, but they are still too few to cater to the need of the Cuban Church”.
