BENEDICT XVI: TO THE AMBASSADOR OF SERBIA, IN THE KOSOVO CRISIS "PRUDENCE AND MODERATION"(2)

"The geographical location of Serbia", went on the Pope, speaking to the new ambassador of the Balkan country, gives it "a unique opportunity to promote ecumenical dialogue, while its familiarity with Islam" opens "rich opportunities" in terms of "inter-religious dialogue". "Both processes – highlighted Benedict XVI – are most important to establish more understanding and respect" between peoples and nations. The Pontiff then assured that "the Catholic Church in Serbia wishes to increase its good relations with the Holy Synod" and commit itself to promoting the unity of the Christians and the "reconciliation with the members of the other religions, to make its contribution" to "peace and harmony" between the nations. A harmony for which, he specified, "an essential factor" is "religious freedom". According to the Pope, "the steps taken over the last few years by Serbia to guarantee this fundamental human right are much appreciated. The plan to give back to the Churches and the religious communities the property that was taken over by the Serbian Federation and the introduction of the teaching of religion in the schools have contributed to the spiritual renewal" of the country, and in this respect "an important example has been given, which the other governments can learn from".
