HUMANITARIAN CRISES: UNICEF, APPEAL FOR 865 MILLION USD FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN 39 COUNTRIES

” “An appeal for 865 million USD in aids for women and children in 39 countries in emergency situations: it was made today by Unicef, as it presented in Geneva the Humanitarian action report, a yearly report about countries in emergency situations. The report provides a review of countries affected by political and military crises, such as Chad and Kenya, long-term conflicts, natural disasters, such as the floods in Mozambique, and lists the emergency measures planned by Unicef and the required funds. "As a consequence of the crisis in Kenya, 300 thousand people have been forced to leave their homes and take shelter in the camps: 150 thousand of them are children, 80 thousand of whom are less than 5 years old. In Chad, the situation is less clear, but it has been estimated that 30 thousand of the 52 thousand refugees are at risk and need immediate assistance", stated in Geneva Hilde Johnson, deputy director of Unicef, as she presented the report. The report shows that conflicts, the main cause of humanitarian crises, are combined with increasingly frequent natural disasters, and that women and children are more and more often the victims of regular rape, often committed as a weapon of war. "We must make sure women and children are protected as much as possible from such atrocities, and that these offenders are legally prosecuted", concluded Johnson.
