ITALY: BISHOPS’ APPEAL FOR THE HORN OF AFRICA

Promoting, in the Italian parish communities, at this time of Lent, "events of prayer, reflection and charity in communion with the Churches" of "Chad, Kenya, Somalia and the troubled region of Darfur, in Sudan", in conjunction with the Office for Missionary Cooperation between the Churches of the Italian Bishops Conference, the Italian Papal Missionary Services and the Italian Caritas. This is the invitation made today by said Office of the Italian Bishops Conference, which highlights, in a note: "the tragic humanitarian situation and the rising insecurity that trouble some countries of the Horn of Africa are causing great concern". Not only "for the generous presence of missionaries, priests fidei donum and Italian volunteers working in the forefront to serve the needy in these areas of crisis, but also for the condition of serious instability in which a multitude of innocent people live", in particular "women, old people and children". Hence the appeal "to those who have political responsibilities, both locally and internationally, that they may find peaceful solutions". "We also encourage – concludes the Office of the Italian Bishops Conference – the efforts of those who, although in insecurity and discomfort, remain in those regions to bring aids and relief to the population".
