ENERGY: PIEBALGS (EU COMMISSION), "KNOWING THE WEAKNESSES OF THE EU TO COPE"

"Security and durability of energy provisions move at the same pace with and have a primary place among the EU’s priority". Andris Piebalgs, EU commissioner in charge, took part yesterday in a workshop with the EU Executive and the World Energy Council to look at the position of Europe and discuss the recent measures taken by the 27 member states. "To respond to the challenges that loom ahead – added Piebalgs at the end of the meeting in Brussels –, we must know our weaknesses, establish close relations with the energy partners, invest today in the technology of tomorrow". The World Council has recently published a report on Europe’s "vulnerability" in the event of energy crises, then provided a few recommendations to cope with them. This also involves "improving the efficiency" of the sources, "increasing use of renewable sources", diversifying the energy used, "referring the problem of nuclear energy to public debate", "adopting research and development policies" for this technology. A summit about energy technology has been planned for 2009.
