EU: DIMAS (COMMISSION), "SHARING INFORMATION TO DEFEND THE ENVIRONMENT" (2)

As for SEIS, Commissioner Stavros Dimas said that, at present, the bulk of environment information available to member States "is not timely supplied. And its format cannot be understood or used immediately either by politicians in charge or citizens; this depends on a series of obstacles of juridical, financial, technical and procedural nature". Through SEIS, whose establishment is proposed in short times, "environment information will be stored in several databases throughout the European Union, and will actually be interconnected and compatible". In this way, the States will be able to rely on "an electronic system allowing them to fulfil the communication duties fixed by EU regulations". Moreover, SEIS will provide the member States of the European Union and institutions with common knowledge and environment data, which will be "more coherent, to facilitate the elaboration and the carrying out of the policies" established for this sector, increasing their effectiveness.
