HOLY LAND: ATTACK IN DIMONA, PIZZABALLA (CUSTODIAN), "FEAR IS BACK"

"If the terrorist origin of the attack is confirmed, it proves that security in Israel has never existed. They have always said something would happen sooner or later in the country". With these words, the Custodian of the Holy Land, father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, comments with SIR the attack that this morning killed three people and injured several – the final number is not known yet – in Dimona, southern Israel. "This attack rekindles in the Israeli people fears that had never really died down and will be one further factor that will decrease any possibility of reaching an agreement", states the Custodian. According to the Israeli secret services, the attack might be related to the pulling down of the passages between Gaza and Egypt, which would have let the terrorists enter Egyptian Sinai, which is not too far from Dimona. "I do not know how the terrorists may have come from Egypt into Israel – stated father Pizzaballa –. The border between Israel and Egypt is very well checked". "It is clear – goes on the priest – that Gaza is a knotty problem to be solved. The Israelis’ retreat had defused tension in the Gaza Strip, which today however is experiencing a split between Hamas and Fatah. A split which does not do anything to solve the crisis". "The attack – he concludes – should not particularly damage the resumption of pilgrimages, partly because the pilgrims’ trails are far from there".
