SPAIN: MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOPS FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION ON 9TH MARCH (2)

According to the Spanish Bishops, "the moral quality and aspirations of the citizens as they vote is the best way to preserve the strength and truthfulness of the democratic institutions". In this sense, "the non-confessional or lay character of the State should not be confused with being unbound to any morality or not having any objective moral duty". But, the bishops explain, "by saying this, we do not ask that leaders subject themselves to the criteria of Catholic morality", but that "they adhere to the common denominator of the morality that is based on the right reason and on the historical experience of every people". After quoting the Pope’s word to say that one should oppose to those policies that endanger the fundamental values, such as the defence of human life, the bishops highlight that "the legislation should protect marriage in its specific character". Then, it is not right to "try and artificially build a society without any religious reference", while this is the direction in which go the attempts to complicate the inclusion of Catholic religion in public-school curricula, such as the syllabus of the new compulsory subject, "Education" to citizenship, "which prejudices the parents’ right to raise their children according to their own religious and moral beliefs".
