"The claim of the military need for cluster bombs seems unacceptable to us": this was repeated by mgr. Silvano Maria Tomasi, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations Office and to the specialist agencies in Geneva, during the meeting (last January 14th) of the Governmental Expert Group of the States which are parties to the "Convention on the prohibition of or restriction on the use of some conventional weapons that can be considered excessively harmful or have indiscriminate effects". The speech has been announced today by the Newsroom of the Holy See. "Preserving life, laying the conditions for a worthy life for whole populations said mgr. Tomasi , ensuring security and stability with as few weapons as possible, are exciting challenges". "Experience he explained shows us that the ban on some weapon categories due to the negotiation of international systems has never endangered the national security of any state. The true danger comes instead from super-armament and the fact of relying on weapons only to ensure national or international security. Development, mutual trust, prevention, the laying of conditions for a worthy life, are the parameters without which there can be no security or stability whatsoever".
