” “Increasing investments in research and development; promoting mobility for researchers in order to "boost the sharing of knowledge"; spurring private contributions in this area. The European Parliament, that will gather in its plenary session in Brussels this week, is called to discuss a report about the development of the "European space of research". The objectives outlined by the EU in 2000 included the development of investments in this area to make them reach 3% of the Gross Domestic Product of the EU member states, two thirds of which from private companies, by 2010. The document, which will be submitted to the floor on January 30th, highlights, however, that so far "the average expenditure in Europe is just 1.84% of the GDP versus 2.68% in the USA and 3.18% in Japan". The report also shows that there are still wide gaps between the investments of the different states, ranging from 0.39% in Romania to 3.86% in Sweden. The document that will be submitted to the MEPs states therefore that it is "essential to create a single job market for research workers" so as to "prevent more talented European research workers moving" to other regions of the world.” “
