EU: A WEBSITE TO EXPLAIN THE LISBON TREATY TO THE CITIZENS

"The Treaty signed on December 13th 2007 in Lisbon by the heads of State and Government of the 27 EU member states will provide the European Union with modern institutions and optimised working methods so as to effectively and efficiently respond to the challenges of today’s world". After insisting on the importance of the Reform Treaty, which this year will undergo national ratifications, so as to be enforced next January 1st, the EU developed a website (www.europa.eu/lisbon_treaty) in the attempt to explain to the EU citizens the contents of the document and its implications on the integration process. The website contains an introduction to the events that led to the signing of the Treaty, the unabridged text of the Treaty and an "annotated summary" of the 274 pages that compose it. This is followed by a "FAQ" section and a section about the ratification procedures, State by State, with updates (so far only Hungary has moved on through its Parliament). Finally, the website provides news about the Treaty (events, official meetings) and a blog.
