Man went on Benedict XVI is "a loved being, made for loving". In addition, man has "freedom" and thus also a "specific ability", i.e. the ability to "distinguish what is good and right". Hence his appeal to the Papal Academies: "In this day and age, when the development of science attracts and seduces with the opportunities it offers, it is more important than ever to teach the consciences of our contemporaries, so that science will not become the criterion for goodness and man will be respected as the centre of creation". The Pope concluded his speech by asking that "every scientific progress be a progress of love, called to put itself at the service of man and mankind".
