UNITY OF CHRISTIANS: METROPOLITAN BISHOP GENNADIOS, "AN IMMENSE JOY" TO PRAY WITH THE POPE TOMORROW

"It is for me an immense joy and I am grateful to God for giving us this fortunate opportunity to be with His Holiness, the Pope, and with the other Christian brothers to pray for this great ideal that God left us, that may everyone be one". In this frame of mind, archbishop Gennadios Zervos, metropolitan bishop of the Orthodox Greeks of Italy and Malta (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople), tomorrow will take part in the Solemn Vespers officiated by Benedict XVI in the Basilica of San Paolo fuori Le Mura to mark the end of the Week of Prayer for the Unity of Christians. The Vespers – as announced by a release from the Basilica di San Paolo – will also be attended by bishop John Flack from the Anglican Communion to the Holy See, Reverend Samuel Kobia, secretary general of the Ecumenical Council of the Churches of Geneva, the members of the Joint Workgroup of the Ecumenical Council and the Catholic Church, with its two co-presidents, the metropolitan bishop Nifon of Targoviste (Orthodox Patriarchate of Romania) and mgr. Diarmuid Martin, archbishop of Dublin. The Papal Council for the Promotion of the Unity of Christians will be there with its president, cardinal Walter Kasper, bishop Brian Farrell, its secretary, and mgr. Eleuterio Francesco Fortino, its deputy secretary.
