ENVIRONMENT: EUROBAROMETER, "THREATS FOR BIODIVERSITY. WORRIED EU CITIZENS"

"The huge majority of EU citizens believe that biodiversity decrease is a serious problem": today, Eurobarometer made known the results of a survey on environment themes "pointing out the preoccupation of Europeans in relation to the decline in the number of animal and vegetable species, or even their disappearance", as well as the problems linked with ecosystems. The experts of the statistic institute said that the most worried citizens are those from "Greece, Portugal, and Romania". The interviewed appeared to be more worried about biodiversity decreasing all over the world rather than about its decrease in their own country. By speaking at the presentation of the survey, Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas confirmed that "biodiversity decrease is irreversible", and for this reason, the European Union "committed itself to protect nature since the seventies", while in the last few years, it has been increasing its attention, and its projects, to a wider and wider extent. Pollution and natural catastrophes due to man "are considered the worst threats for biodiversity", said Eurobarometer, while 93% of the interviewed considered its defence "a moral duty".
