The European Parliament has focussed on Kenya, China and Egypt, expressing itself in relation to democracy and human rights through three different directives. First of all, the Assembly had "doubts on the reliability of election results in Kenya", and asked the current president, Mwai Kibaki, "to respect the democratic commitments of his country, confirmed by the National Constitution", and "to consent to an independent check of the presidential vote". It this was not possible, the Assembly would ask for new elections. Furthermore, "political violence and the following humanitarian crisis" which is currently going on in the country were condemned. Therefore, the government and the EU Commission were asked "to supply the necessary humanitarian aid". Moreover, the Parliament condemned "the arrest of Chinese dissident Hu Jia", and asked for his "immediate release", together with other opponents. China was asked "not to take advantage of the Olympic Games as pretext to restrict freedom of expression". China will have to show everyone it will be able "to respect human rights and the legally constituted state". Finally, a reproach concerned Egypt, in favour of respect for political opponents, journalists and religious minorities such as the Coptes.
