CHILDREN: EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ASKS FOR A SHARED STRATEGY TO DEFEND CHILDREN’S RIGHTS

The EU’s future strategy for the protection of children’s rights "should appreciate the important role of the family", "as the fundamental social institution for the survival, protection and development of children". This is a passage from the report approved by the European Parliament, gathered in Strasbourg until this afternoon, which all the political parties of the Assembly subscribed to. The text should urge the EU Commission to take position and coordinate measures between the EU and its member states. The MEPs ask for commitment to defending the health, physical integrity and educational opportunities of children, and make pressures for the enforcement of a "shared adoption system that will improve the quality of assistance in information services, preparation to international adoptions and after-adoption services". With 200 votes for, 367 against and 134 abstentions, the European Parliament repealed a section of the report, which, by expressing concern for the many violations of rights of which girls from immigrant families are the victims, advised the member states to ban the wearing of veils or hijab, "at least at primary school".
