ITALY: THE POPE AND UNIVERSITY, RELEASE FROM THE ITALIAN BISHOPS

” “Here is the full text of the release published by the presidency of the Italian Bishops Conference about the cancellation of Benedict XVI’s visit to La Sapienza University, due on January 17th. "Following the decision to cancel the Holy Father’s visit to La Sapienza University in Rome, which should have taken place on Thursday 17th January, the Presidency of the Italian Bishops Conferences expresses its own unconditional sympathy with Benedict XVI, who received a very serious rejection, which is the expression of antidemocratic intolerance and cultural narrow-mindedness. Even more so, because the Holy Father’s visit was the friendly response to an invitation made by the University’s managing bodies, which however has been made ineffective by the ideological and quarrelsome violence of few people. We hope that, by restoring the cultural identity and the educational role of the University, through the work of the teachers and the responsible participation of the students, the life of the University may go back to that orderly form that is the only one which can lead people to cultural acquisition and confrontation, at the service of the person and of society".” “
