EU: ESC, AGRICULTURAL POLICY AND WATER RESOURCES ON THE POLITICAL AGENDA

The Economic and Social Committee, the EU’s advisory body, will meet again after the holidays. The Sustainable Development Committee will meet in Brussels today to discuss three bills of law. "One is about the situation of the common agricultural policy – explains a note from ESC –, while the other two concern the problem of water resources and drought in the Union, as well as nutritional problems", especially obesity, which affects a growing number of EU citizens. Seamus Murray, of the Central-Eastern community (Ireland), will chair the debate on the Common Agricultural Policy. He states that the Common Agricultural Policy "successfully evolved to face the new challenges" and adapt to the new reality, thus "significantly contributing to territorial cohesion in the EU member states". The document that will be discussed by the ESC also highlights the diversity of regional productions and specificities, which is typical of a EU that has now 27 member states. The final adoption of the opinion about agriculture should take place at the plenary meeting of the ESC on 6th and 7th February.
