CHINA: DEATH PENALTY; AMNESTY PROTESTS AGAINST INCREASED USE OF POISON INJECTIONS

Today, Amnesty International deplored the announced rise in the use of poison injections as a method for the execution of death penalty in China and asked Peking’s Government "to move faster towards the abolition of death penalty". "This announcement does not only arrive just few weeks after the adoption of the UN resolution asking for a moratorium on death penalty – stated Daniela Carboni of the Italian section of Amnesty International -, but it also goes against the spirit of the Olympic Charter, which places the protection of human dignity at the centre of the Olympic movement. There’s nothing dignified or humane in the fact the State kills, regardless of the method it uses". "One year ago – recalls Amnesty –, the Supreme Court resumed its role as a reviewer of all the death sentences issued in China. This decision might result in a reduction in the number of executions". However, they highlight, "the lack of transparency around death penalty still makes it difficult to appreciate if there have been any positive results". In the run-up to the Olympic Games of Peking, Amnesty keeps asking the Chinese Government, among other requests regarding human rights, "a significant decrease in the application of death penalty, as a first step towards its full abolition".
