FRANCE: BISHOPS’ NOTE ON "FOSTER MOTHERHOOD"

"The sufferings of the couples who cannot have children cannot be ignored. But one must watch out for the disruption that the use of foster motherhood can induce in our concept of couple, of child, and the child’s place in the family". It was stated today by bishop Jean-Charles Descubes, president of the Council for family and social issues of the French Bishops Conference, in a press release published on www.cef.fr. "The questions of the moral authorities of our country and the policy-makers", explains the bishop, "show how important it is not to stop within the boundaries of a media debate and calmly reflect on the issue". Mgr. Descubes explains that foster motherhood raises three types of questions: "the motherhood of the woman who donates the egg, the woman who gives birth, and the woman who raises the child". "This splitting – continues the prelate – creates bonds of social intimacy that had been unknown so far. In this, it differs from adoption, which clearly responds to an existing situation."
