COUNCIL OF EUROPE: IN STRASBOURG AND RUST, UNIVERSITY OF DEMOCRACY AND PEACE CAMP

Three initiatives of the Council of Europe in the area of democracy and participation. Today, at the Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg, the HQ of the organisation founded in 1949 which has 47 member states, the third summer university has just started; this year it will be focussed on "Governance, power and democracy". Until 4th July, 600 people from the Schools of political studies of 16 countries will hold workshops, meetings and round tables. Speakers will include Terry Davis, secretary general of the CoE, who opened the session, the MEP Meglena Kuneva and the president of Montenegro, Filip Vujanovic. In additio, the Europa-park (Rust, Germany) opened today; it is a sort of "campus" which for six days will bring together forty young people from Israel and Palestine, Albania and Serbs from Kosovo. "The purpose of the event – explain the promoters – is to discuss the current controversies and try to put forward new, peaceful solutions" in the Middle East and the Balkans. From July 1st to 7th, also at the Europa-park, 32 adolescents from Serbia, Albanians from Kosovo, Arabs and Jews of Israel will meet for the fourth "peace camp".
