TRANSPORT: TAJANI (EU COMMISSION) "SAFER, MORE PUNCTUAL FLIGHTS IN EUROPE"

"Safer, more ecological and more punctual flights": this is the promise made by the EU Commission, which adopted today the second law package named "European single sky". The provision "contains proposals for improving quality, reducing costs and limiting delays", as well as "cutting down on fuel consumption, with the airlines saving up to 16 million tons of CO2 emissions and 2-3 billion euros a year". The package contains measures to rearrange flight connections between the European cities, improve airport facilities, and adopt modern, environmentally-friendly technology. According to the EU Executive, this reform "will enable us to cope with the expected doubling of air traffic by 2020". Antonio Tajani, Transport Commissioner, expects "benefits for everyone: passengers, the economy and the environment. The European sky – he explains – is still fragmentary, so every flight is usually 49 km longer than needed. The purpose of our proposal is to reduce waiting times at take off and landing, so the passengers will have more chances of arriving on time. At the same time, the package will make for safer flights" and "will increase airport capacity".
