CARITAS IN EUROPE: GIORDANO (CCEE), "THE PROPELLER OF THE ECUMENICAL AND INTER-RELIGIOUS PROCESS" (2)

For mgr. Giordano, it is important for Europe to question itself on the meaning of life. "We must not forget – this is one of his examples – that every year 50,000 people commit suicide in Europe and in 7-8 European countries suicide accounts for the highest death rate among young people". But, as to the European values, differences about the contents of such values remain open: "In the name of one value – he said –, one can take entirely different positions: for example, human dignity is invoked both against and for abortion". The same applies to euthanasia, the use of stem cells, and so on. In a Europe of diversity and ecumenical and religious pluralism (285 million Catholics, 161 million Orthodox people, 77 million Protestants, 26 million Anglicans, 2 and a half million Jews, 35 million Muslims, 2 and a half million Buddhists and many followers of "alternative" religions), according to mgr. Giordano, the only way is "true dialogue, so as to combine unity and difference, accomplish a unity that is not a destruction but an accomplishment of difference". Because, he went on, "the common good coincides with the reality of dialogue". Therefore, the work carried out by Caritas consists in the "accomplishment in the world of workshops of solidarity, justice, sustainable life, peace, human dignity, human rights, as well as Catholicism, inter-religious dialogue and culture".
