CARITAS IN EUROPE: GIORDANO (CCEE), "THE PROPELLER OF THE ECUMENICAL AND INTER-RELIGIOUS PROCESS"

Europe "must take care of the world" and therefore of the "universal common good", which "coincides with the reality of in-depth dialogue": in this sense, Caritas is "the true propeller of the ecumenical process", can "make religions meet" and "inspire the great educational and cultural work" which can "tidy up the ideas of Europe". This is in short the opinion of mgr. Aldo Giordano, secretary general of the Council of the European Bishops Conferences, who spoke in Assisi today at the theme assembly on "Giving a future to Europe: the work of the Christian Churches", on the third day of the 32nd national meeting of the diocesan Caritas agencies of Italy, which will be ending tomorrow. "Speaking of boundaries – specified mgr. Giordano – means thinking of Europe not as of a fortress, withdrawn into self-interest, but as a continent which becomes more stable to better accomplish the exchange of its assets with the other regions of the earth and contribute to justice and peace in the world". "At a time of universal mobilisation and global connection – he explained –, Europe can only be appreciated in its connections with the other continents. The truly interesting point is the ‘universal common good’, not the exclusive good of one continent only". "Europe must take care of the world – added mgr. Giordano –, not least because the world is coming to Europe". (continued)
