EUROPE AND ISLAM: ITALY, INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP "TO BUILD TRUE DIALOGUE"

"To build true dialogue between Europe and Islam, made up of mutual listening and exchanges, that will lead to the erection of the common European house", it is essential "to help Islam to tell itself in a European manner, to accomplish itself within this context and this civilisation, while retaining its identity and its specific features". This is the belief that promoted the international workshop on "Religious freedom: towards a European Islam?", which will take place at Villa Cagnola di Gazzada (Varese-Italy, www.villacagnola.it) on July 4th and 5th. The event is promoted by the Istituto Superiore di Studi religiosi and Fondazione Ambrosiana Paolo VI in conjunction with the Diocese of Milan. A public round table will be held on July 4th with all the experts taking part in the workshop. The workshop instead will be held behind closed doors and will be attended by about twenty people, including experts, university lecturers, people of culture, Catholic and lay philosophers, and Italian and foreign moderate Islamic leaders. This event continues the process started last October by the conference about "Religious freedom, a milestone in the new Europe", chaired by cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State.
