ANGLICANS: IN JERUSALEM THE CONFERENCE OF TRADITIONALIST BISHOPS DISSENTING FROM CANTERBURY (2)

"Since 1997, we have made huge efforts – explains the Nigerian archbishop – to try to avoid this crisis, but in vain. Now’s the time to take decisions. If we don’t do something, we risk driving millions of people out of the faith revealed by the Holy Scriptures". From Jerusalem, the spokesman of Gafcon, Arne Fjeldstad, explains to SIR that "there will be no official statement of a schism. However, very many issues will be brought up. What was stated in the book is that the Communion has been seriously damaged and there are elements that might break the communion". The "book" that will be presented tonight – goes on the spokesman – is a working document. It will be revealed at the conference on Sunday morning and discussed all through next week. The final document will be issued at the end of the conference on Sunday 29th June". Arne Fjeldstad mentions that "the discussion will be focussed on how this movement is going to go on, and what relation it should have with the Anglican Communion". The Jerusalem meeting will not be attended by any official delegates from Canterbury nor "will the vast majority of the bishops who are here in Jerusalem attend the Lambeth Conference, because – explains Fjeldstad – they have serious problems going there because of the presence of the liberal bishops of the United States and Canada.
