SYDNEY 2008: MGR. HICKEY (PERTH) "WITH THE WYD, A GREAT REBIRTH OF FAITH"

Renewed interest in the Church. This seems to be the first fruit for Australia of the WYD, which will be opening in less than one month (15-20 July) in Sydney. "With the WYD at the door, the Australians are experiencing renewed interest in the Church – states the archbishop of Perth, mgr. Barry Hickey, on the website H2o news –. We hope the event can be an opportunity for everyone’s growth. We are sure there will be a great rebirth of faith among young people. Enthusiasm is infecting even people who do not go to Church, who do not think of religion, who do not pray. I am sure the WYD will produce leaders who will go back to their local churches and will bring along more young people and will be great ambassadors of faith". At the same time, however, there are also some challenges to be overcome. "The difficult thing – explains the archbishop – is that there is not much coverage about Australia, except in the event of some catastrophe. I think however that the websites are well made and very informative. Now everyone has heard of Sydney and of the city bridge. So one can have a look at the Sydney website and read all one likes about the Catholic Church in Australia".” “
