LISBON TREATY: LENARCIC (EU COUNCIL), "GOING ON WITH THE RATIFICATIONS, BUT UNDERSTANDING THE IRISH NO"

"The European Council will have to show that the EU has not stopped": Janez Lenarcic, Secretary of State for European Affairs of Slovenia, the current president of the, explains the meaning of the meeting due in Brussels on June 19th and 20th. The 27 heads of state and government of the European Union will meet, with a tight agenda of momentous issues (from food prices to the future of the Balkans), top of which is the approval of the Lisbon Treaty, after the failure of the Irish referendum. "We have many problems to solve which concern the citizens. We cannot stop Europe again". Come to Strasbourg to closely follow the works of the European Parliament, Lenarcic adds: "The ratification of the Treaty is a nationwide process. This is a procedure that must be abided by. So it is essential for the other countries, which have not passed their opinion yet, to do so. The votes for are already 18, and this too is essential". Then, Lenarcic admits that "we must understand the message given by the Irish voters", so that then we can decide together "how to move on with a view to adopting the Treaty".
